Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls independent candidate Zayeda Khatun, who is the mother of the former mayor Jahangir Alam, contacted several foreign embassies, asking them to order the Election Commission to deploy troops to ensure credible polls.
She also requested the envoys to engage diplomatic observers in the election.
She made this request in a letter written to ambassadors and high commissioners of different countries including the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, China, and India on Sunday.
Previously, the candidate sent a letter with the same request to the Election Commission secretary, chief election commissioner, returning officer, election-related officers, and other officials of the government.
In the letter, Khatun mentions that she is the mother of GCC ex-mayor Jahangir Alam, and tells the envoys the story of how his candidacy was unjustly denied.
“My opponent candidate of the ruling Awami League nominated Azmat Ullah Khan is obstructing my campaign activities in the constituencies, defaming my public image, and using various means to intimidate my polling agents and potential agents. They are threatening them in the guise of private goons and special police personnel,” the letter reads.
Zayeda Khatun also claimed that she has made several written complaints to the GCC returning officer several times, and on May 18, she sent a complaint to the chief election commissioner as well.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, a complaint was filed against Zayeda Khatun for allegedly concealing information about assets worth Tk4.66 crore.
The complaint was filed with Anti Corruption Commission's Gazipur office by Atiqul Islam, a Gono Front-backed mayoral candidate on Sunday.
On May 18, the car of Zayeda Khatun allegedly come under attack by supporters of Azmat Ullah Khan, the candidate backed by the ruling Awami League.
The 70-year-old's son, suspended GCC mayor Jahangir Alam, made the claim, saying the attack took place during election campaigning in ward No 44 at around 6:45pm on Thursday.
