A complaint has been filed against the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls' independent candidate Zayeda Khatun, mother of suspended GCC mayor Jahangir Alam, for allegedly concealing information about assets worth Tk4.66 crore.
The complaint was filed with Anti Corruption Commission's Gazipur office by Atiqul Islam, a Gono Front-backed mayoral candidate on Sunday.
The complaint mentioned that Zayeda Khatun has Tk4.66 crore, according to the Information obtained from the website of the Bangladesh Election Commission. It also shows that in the income tax return of the 2022-23 tax year filed with the election affidavit of Zayda Khatun, she has shown Tk4.66 crore as business capital.
However, Zayeda Khatun did not mention where her money is kept, where it is invested, or how it is managed in the election affidavit.
Khatun was also accused of concealing wealth, and the complaint sought to recognize the hidden money as illegal.
Mozahar Ali, deputy director of the Gazipur integrated district office of ACC, said: ”We have received a written complaint. Further action has been taken as per Anti Corruption Commission Act.”
On Sunday, Former Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam, and son of Zayeda Khatun, claimed himself innocent and said he was being harassed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
"I have not committed any corruption. ACC is harassing me for no valid reason," he told journalists while visiting the ACC head office on Sunday.
On May 18, the car of Zayeda Khatun allegedly come under attack by supporters of Azmat Ullah Khan, the candidate backed by the ruling Awami League.
The 70-year-old's son, suspended GCC mayor Jahangir Alam, made the claim, saying the attack took place during election campaigning in ward No 44 at around 6:45pm on Thursday.
