Expressing satisfaction with the polling environment, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Saturday said that there were no irregularities in the Faridpur-2 by-election.
The CEC made the comment to reporters at the CCTV monitoring centre in Nirbachan Bhaban.
The by-election began at 8am on Saturday and will continue till 4pm.
The CEC along with other commissioners were monitoring the polling through 1,052 CCTV cameras from Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
“I did not see any irregularities at all. The Faridpur by-election is being held very peacefully,” he said.
However, the voter turnout is relatively low, said the CEC.
Pointing out that CCTV cameras have positive sides, the CEC said: “Monitoring through CCTV cameras is a new addition. It will further expand control and electoral governance.”
Meanwhile, Kazi Habibul Awal said that the commission has received one-third of the probe report on voting irregularities in the recently cancelled Gaibandha-5 by-polls.
Another week is needed for a final decision in this regard, he added.
On October 12, the commission cancelled the by-election to the Gaibandha-5 amid widespread allegations of vote rigging and voter intimidation.
