The by-election to Faridpur-2 constituency, which fell vacant after the death of Awami League Presidium Member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, will be held on Saturday.
The balloting will start at 8am and will continue till 4pm while the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and other election commissioners will monitor the entire procedure from Dhaka.
As many as 1,052 CCTV cameras have been installed at polling booths ahead of Saturday's voting.
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in Saturday's voting, said the EC.
Awami League-backed candidate Shahadab Akbar Labu Chowdhury, the younger son of late Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, and Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan candidate Md Zainul Abedin Bakul Mia are contesting in the by-election.
Six people, including Shahadab, had submitted nomination paper to fight in the by-polls. Two of the nomination papers were rejected by the EC while two other candidates withdrew their papers on the last day – leaving Shahadab and Zainul Abedin to contest the by-election.
Zainul Abedin told Dhaka Tribune that he was contesting the polls with the people's mandate. He expressed his hope of winning the by-polls saying that the people are eager to cast their votes.
The ruling party candidate on the other hand said that people are reluctant to cast their ballots in by-polls. But he hoped that the turnout will be much better than expected.
Faridpur-2 constituency consists of Nagarkanda, Saltha and Sadarpur upazilas. It has some 318,479 eligible voters.
Besides, voting will be held in 806 polling booths in 123 polling stations.
Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury breathed her last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on September 11 at the age of 87.
The deputy leader of the House had been admitted to hospital with post-Covid-19 complications two weeks earlier.
