19 chairman candidates to win uncontested in Zilla Parishad polls

Owing to the lack of rival candidates in the upcoming Zilla Parishad election, 19 chairman aspirants are set to win uncontested.

This accounts for one-third of Zilla Parishad chairman candidates running unopposed, reports Bangla Tribune.

A total of 162 nomination papers have been submitted for the post of chairman, 1,983 for the post of general members, and 715 for the post of reserved members, a report by the Election Commission showed.

The lone candidates are from Gopalganj, Chapainawabganj, Jhalkathi, Tangail, Thakurgaon, Naogaon, Narayanganj, Feni, Barguna, Bagerhat, Bhola, Madaripur, Munshiganj, Moulvibazar, Lakshmipur, Lalmonirhat, Shariatpur, Sirajganj and Sylhet districts.

Besides, a maximum of six candidates have submitted nomination papers for the post for chairman post in Kishoreganj and Chandpur. 

On August 23, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the election of 61th Zilla Parishads in Bangladesh, excluding the three hill districts. Zilla Parishad polls will be held on October 17.

Awami League has finalized its candidates for the post of chairman in 61 district councils of the country. 

The candidates were finalized in the joint meeting of Awami League's Parliamentary Board and Local Government People's Representative Nomination Board chaired by party President Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban on Saturday.
