The Election Commission (EC) has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) in 150 constituencies in the next general election.

The decision was taken in a meeting at the Election Commission headquarters in the capital’s Agargaon on Tuesday, said Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary to the EC.

He said: "The commission has decided that polls in approximately 150 seats will be conducted through EVMs."

CEC Kazi Habibul Awal and other election commissioners were present during the meeting.

"At present, we have 150,000 EVMs. Voting in 70-75 seats can be carried out with these. The commission can buy more EVMs, if necessary," said Ashok Debnath.

However, the commission is yet to fix the constituencies where EVMs will be used, he added.

Asked whether there was a rush to take the decision, the additional secretary said that it is the jurisdiction of the commission and they have decided so.

He stated that the commission took the decision after taking the advice of all political parties into consideration.
