Six candidates submitted nomination papers for contesting the by-elections to Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj) on Wednesday, on the last day of submitting papers.

Polls will be held in the constituency on November 5 while candidates wishing to withdraw from the race have until October 19 to do so.

The candidates started gathering at the Sarail Upazila election office at 11am.

Jatiya Party’s (JaPa) Md Abdul Hamid Bhasani submitted his nomination paper at the EC office around noon. An hour later, ruling party candidate Md Shahjahan Alam Saju submitted his nomination paper.

Independent candidate, former member of parliament and JaPa leader Ziaul Huq Mridha, Zaker Party candidate Jahirul Islam Jewel, National People’s Party candidate Md Abdur Razzaq and independent candidate Md Ibrahim also submitted their nomination papers on Wednesday.

On October 7, former BNP leader Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan’s son Mainul Hasan Tushar collected nomination form to contest in the by-polls and sought Awami League’s blessings which ultimately went to Md Shahjahan Alam Saju.

Saju told Dhaka Tribune that he wished to complete the incomplete projects in the remaining one month of the government, if elected. His opponent, JaPa candidate Bhasani said he wants to contest the polls for the wellbeing of the people.

Former MP and independent candidate Mridha said he is confident of winning the polls.

Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be completed today ahead of the polls while appeal against the EC decisions will have to be done by October 13.

The seat fell vacant after Abdus Sattar passed away on September 30. He earlier resigned from parliament along with other BNP leaders and contested the by-election as an independent candidate.
