EC search panel not to publish final list of 10 candidates

A dozen names have been finalized, but panel decides not to disclose them

Update : 20 Feb 2022, 09:58 PM

The search committee, formed by President M Abdul Hamid, will not reveal the names of 10 final candidates for the positions of chief election commissioner and other election commissioners.

The committee is likely to finalize the names at a meeting on Tuesday.

Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Appellate Division confirmed the matter on Sunday evening after the sixth meeting at the judges' lounge of the Supreme Court, reports Bangla Tribune.

"Till today (Sunday), the search committee has finalized the names of 12 to 13 people. However, the committee will not reveal their names,” he said.

Earlier, Justice Hassan presided over the meeting, accompanied by committee members Justice SM Quddus Zaman of the High Court Division, Auditor General Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Md Sohrab Hossain, former election commissioner Sohul Hossain and fiction writer Anwara Syed Haque.

Justice Hassan said: “We hope to hold the last meeting on Tuesday to finalize the list and send it to the president.

“Our law states that we must report within 15 working days. Our last working day is February 26. But before that… we hope that the list will reach the president by February 24.”

In response to a question, Justice Obaidul said: "Legally, our job is to recommend the names. We can only reveal the names if the president permits us. Otherwise, he himself will reveal the names."

Asked if the search committee would add any other name to the list, he said that even though they had the jurisdiction, they would not want to do it.

President Hamid formed the search committee on February 5.
