Boat wins 4 out of 17 UP polls in Rangamati

As many as 59 candidates contested the chairman posts

In the 7th phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections, Awami League candidates have won the post of chairman in 4 out of 17 unions of Rangamati.

The results were announced unofficially on Monday night.

Oliv Chakma, the Awami League candidate in Baghaichhari union, and Jasmine Chakma, an independent candidate in Rupkari union, were elected unopposed.

Voting started at 8am on Monday, but men and women of different ages were seen waiting in line at polling stations ahead of schedule despite the cold.

A total of 15 platoon Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 1,000 policemen and 3,000 Ansar members were deployed in three upazilas to keep the peace.

Furthermore, two platoons were deployed to each upazila as strike forces. 

As many as 16 executive magistrates performed their duties in the election, said District Election Officer Shafiqul Islam.

A total of 1,26,0367 voters cast ballots at 158 polling stations in the 18 unions of the three upazilas. 

As many as 59 candidates contested the chairman posts, 415 the general member posts , and 148 reserved women member posts.
