Justice Obaidul Hassan, who is set to head the Election Commission search committee, has pledged to carry out his duties as per the law and constitution.
He made the remarks hours after his appointment as the committee chief was confirmed on Saturday.
“I will soon sit with the other members of the committee,” he said.
On Saturday, a Cabinet Division circular was published as a gazette notification naming Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Appellate Division as panel chief.
Justice SM Kuddus Zaman of the High Court Division has been included in the panel.
The comptroller and auditor general, and chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission have been made members of the committee as stipulated in the new law.
The government also named former election commissioner Muhammad Sohul Hussain and writer Anwara Syed Haq for the panel in line with the provision of the inclusion of two eminent citizens in the law.
Justice Hassan told a national daily that he cannot yet say whether the new commission will be neutral and acceptable but the panel will carry out its duty with utmost sincerity.
Saying that he is yet to speak to the cabinet secretary or his colleagues, the top court judge added that it has not yet been decided when the search committee would start functioning.
