Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar has said there were no significant clashes or unrest in the Narayanganj City Corporation elections.
“This election is the last city corporation election of our tenure. I would say this one and the Comilla City Corporation election were our two best,” he said while reading out a written statement at the Bangladesh Election Commission office in Agargaon on Sunday evening.
Earlier on Sunday, he visited 14 polling booths at four polling centres. He refused to take questions from journalists immediately after inspecting the situation at the booths.
On Sunday evening, he said that he was quite surprised to see that member of the parliament ran campaigns, violating the electoral code of conduct.
“That MP did not even receive any letter for violating conduct, unlike others. Why was that particular MP spared?” he questioned.
He added that a peaceful election was not necessarily an unbiased election.
He also pointed out that he learned from media that some people were arrested, but authorities concerned could not give confirmation.
“I am against arresting polling agents until the election is over. However, criminal offenses are a different issue,” he said.
After a heated election campaign over 18 days, voting in the Narayanganj elections started at 192 polling centres in 27 wards of the city at 8am on Sunday and continued till 4pm without any break. There were 1333 polling booths in the 192 centres.
The constituency has a total of 517,362 registered voters – 259,846 men, 257,511 women and four people from third gender communities.
Voters stamped ballots to select the mayor, nine reserved women councillors and 27 councillors. Seven candidates contested the mayoral race, while 148 candidates contested the general councillor posts and 34 candidates contested the reserved councillor seats for women.
