Syedpur municipality mayoral poll cancelled as candidate dies

The Election Commission has suspended the election to other positions in the municipality as well

The mayoral election in Syedpur municipality in Nilphamari, scheduled for January 16, has been cancelled, while, polls to other positions in the municipality has been put on hold.

The Election Commission issued the directive to suspend all election activities in the municipality on Thursday afternoon, following the death of mayoral candidate Amzad Hossain. 

Nilphamari district Election Officer Fazlul Karim confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune. 

He said independent candidate Amzad Hossain, who was also the incumbent mayor of Syedpur municipality, passed away at around 6:30am on Thursday, while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka. 

Following his death, Election Commission Deputy Secretary Md Atiar Rahman issued a letter cancelling the mayoral race and suspended the rest of the election per Section 20 of the Local Government (Municipality) Election Guideline, 2010.
