EC orders deputy speaker to leave polling area

Elections in Fulchari and Saghata Upazilas under Gaibandha-5 constituency are scheduled for March 28

Update : 16 Mar 2019, 11:14 PM

The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday ordered the Parliament’s Deputy Speaker, Fazle Rabbi Miah, to leave Gaibandha-5 election area for violating the code of conduct in upazila polls.

Separate letters, signed by EC Deputy Secretary Atiur Rahman, ordered Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, to leave his polling area by 6pm on Saturday, and Cox's Bazar-3 constituency lawmaker, Shaimum Sarwar Kamal, to leave his polling area by 5pm Sunday (March 17).

The letters warned them that they would have to bear the expenditure of the election commission if the elections stopped in the upazila parishad because of their influence.

Elections to Cox's Bazar Sadar and Ramu Upazilas will be held on March 24.

Elections in Fulchari and Saghata Upazilas under Gaibandha-5 constituency are scheduled for March 28.

Earlier, the EC directed six MPs to leave the polling areas during the first phase of the polls. Also, elections in three upazilas were suspended because of possibilities of influencing the elections.

A case was filed against the Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) of the Social Welfare Ministry, Nuruzzaman Ahmed, for influencing the election in Aditmari Upazila Parishad in Lalmonirhat.
