Voter turnout in both Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-election and in 36 wards of Dhaka north and south city corporations (DSCC) was around 50%, the Election Commission has said.
Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told reporters at the Commission Secretariat on Thursday that 50% voteshave been cast in both DNCC and DSCC.

Helal Uddin held a media briefing after voting ended at 4pm.
“Voter turnout was low because there were no big contenders for the mayor post. Also the mayor and councillor positions will only be valid for another year,” he said.
“Turnout was higher in places where councillor elections were held,” he added.
Outside of Dhaka, the turnout was higher, the secretary said, adding that 70% voteswere cast in the Patuakhali municipal election, held the same day.

The election was fair and peaceful and no unpleasant incidentswere reported, the official said.
“Especially the electionsto councilor postswere participatory and had a festive environment. Voting was not postponed at any centre,” Helal added.
