  • Seva House fined Tk50,000

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has suspended all kinds of activities in two buildings in Dhaka's Gulshan area due to a lack of proper fire prevention measures.

At the same time, two restaurants located in these buildings, along with another establishment, have been fined a total of Tk190,000.

DNCC Zone-3 Executive Magistrate Julkar Nayan conducted the court at 1pm on Wednesday. DNCC Executive Magistrate Mahmudul Hasan and Fire Service and Civil Defense officials accompanied him.

Executive Magistrate Zulkar Nayon said: “Due to the lack of proper fire prevention measures, Kacchi Bhai restaurant located in Gulshan-2 was fined Tk100,000, another restaurant named Dhansiri was fined Tk40,000, and Seva House was fined Tk50,000 for storing goods on the front stairs. Later, after reviewing the overall safety measures of the two buildings, all activities there were declared suspended. The buildings were declared risky then, and DNCC hung banners to indicate this.

“There are many restaurants in these buildings, but none have appropriate fire extinguishing systems. Although there are two narrow stairs on either side, how these hotels got approval in such a situation is questionable. They have been asked to submit all documents by this evening, and further actions will be determined after reviewing those documents,” Julkar Nayan said.

Following the Bailey Road fire, which claimed 46 lives, law enforcement agencies are monitoring restaurants in Dhaka to ensure proper fire safety and to determine whether there is an emergency exit route in case of an accident.
