The Election Commission has asked the Road Transport and Highways Division to impose a four day ban on the use of motorcycles in Dhaka, from February 26 to March 1, as part of preparations for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) polls.
The commission has also requested a ban on the use of all vehicles in the capital from February 27-28, according to a letter from the Election Commission to the secretary of the road transport division sent on February 13.
The 10 types of vehicles for which bans were requested are: two-stroke auto-rickshaws, four-stroke auto-rickshaws, easy-bikes, taxicabs, microbuses, SUVs, small trucks, sedans, buses, trucks, and all other locally operated motor run vehicles.
However, the ban will not apply to candidates, their agents, or election observers with accredited ID cards, if they have permission from the returning officers.
The ban will also not apply to journalists with accredited identity cards, officials assigned to election duty, members of law enforcement agencies, approved visitors, and emergency services such as ambulances, fire service, electricity and gas services, or post and telecommunication services, says the letter.
The authorities concerned can also relax the ban on national highways, port and emergency commodity transportation, or any other emergency needs, the letter adds.
