Syed Ashraful Islam’s younger brother and sister have purchased Awami League’s nominations to contest in the Kishoreganj 1 re-election, scheduled to be held on February 28.

Syed Ashraf’s former aide Tofazzal Hossain bought the nomination form for the seat on behalf of Syed Shafayet while Lipi's cousin, Anna Milky, collected the nomination form, on behalf of Lipi, from the ruling party chief’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka around 11am on Friday, confirmed Awami League Deputy Office Secretary Biplob Barua.

On Thursday, five other aspirants collected nomination papers to run in the re-election of Kishoreganj 1 constituency.

The last date of nomination form submission is January 31.

The Election Commission has set February 28 for the Kishoreganj 1 re-election; and for the DNCC mayoral by-election, and polls to elect councillors for the 36 new wards added to the north and south city corporations.

The Kishoreganj 1 constituency seat fell vacant following the death of MP-elect and former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.

Ashraful had won the seat in the December 30 general election. He won from this seat for five consecutive terms from 1996 to 2018.

He was suffering from lung cancer, and died at a hospital in Thailand on January 3, before he could take the oath of office..

Awami League will finalize its list of candidates for the DNCC mayoral by-election and Kishoreganj 1 re-election on Saturday at a joint meeting of the party's parliamentary and local government selection boards.
