Chief Election Commissioner (CEC)KM Nurul Huda has said that the mayoralby-election to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be held alongside the upazila parishad polls around the country.
“The commission will discuss the matter and make a final decision soon. We want to hold the elections as soon as possible,” he told reporters at the Election Commission office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Huda said the new schedule for the DNCC election would also be announced soon.
However, it will not affect in any way the upazila parishad elections, which the commission plans to organize in March in several phases, he stressed.
The CEC’s comment came hours after a High Court bench cleared the way to hold the DNCCby-pollby withdrawing a previous order that had stayed the electionprocess.
The court also rejected three separate petitions related to the election.
On January 14 last year, another High Court bench had stayed for six months the DNCC mayoral by-election following two separate petitions.
As per the schedule declared by the Election Commission, the by-poll for the DNCC mayoral post was supposed to be held on February 26, 2018.
The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of AnnisulHuq on November 30, 2017.
