Upazila parishad elections from March, Bangladeshi expats to become voters

The last upazila parishad polls were held in seven phases in 2014

The fifth upazila parishad elections will begin in the first week of March, to be held in several phases.  

Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed made the announcement during a press briefing at the commission’s office in Agargaon, Dhaka on Thursday.

The commission secretary also mentioned that the last edition of the upazila parishad elections were held in seven phases in 2014.

According to Section 17(1) (Ga) of the Upazila Parishad Act 1998, upazila parishad elections have to be held within 180 days of the expiration of the previous upazila parishad’s tenure.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission secretary also said a delegation from the commission was set to travel to Singapore within a week, to begin preparations for registering Bangladeshi expatriate voters.

“After Singapore, the delegation will travel to the UAE,” Helal Uddin said.
