He congratulated Awami League for its landslide victory

Update : 31 Dec 2018, 01:03 PM

The 11th general election will remain a bright example in the country’s history of democracy, says the Election Commission secretary.

“For the first time in the history of Bangladesh, a peaceful election has been held under a partisan government. Local and foreign observers have expressed their satisfaction over the election,” Helal Uddin Ahmed told reporters, after the outcome of the election was clear, early on Monday.

He congratulated ruling Awami League for its landslide victory and other parties for their cooperation in holding a successful election.

Helal said there had been curiosity and worries about the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the election. “The commission has been able to use the EVMs successfully. We will use the machines in all future elections.”

He said they will try to get EVM results much earlier, in future.

The commission used EVMs in six constituencies during the election.

The secretary said their next task is to publish the gazette notification of election results.

“We will hand over the gazette to the speaker who will take on the next procedures,” he said.
