Pre-election violence continued across the country on Thursday, leaving 27 people including three candidates injured on the 17th and last day of electioneering ahead of the December 30 general election.
The clashes occurred in Meherpur, Comilla, Satkhira, Rangamati, Tangail, and Sunamganj
In Meherpur, miscreants torched an election campaign office of the Awami League candidate from Meherpur 2 constituency at Bholadanga village in Gangni upazila early on Thursday.
Police visited the location after being informed of the incident.
In another incident, miscreants hurled two crude bombs and fired blanks at the house of Gangni upazila unit BNP General Secretary Asaduzzaman Bablu on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at the Cougaccha area of Gangni upazila.
Tozbira Zaman, wife of the BNP leader, said Bablu was not in the house at the time of the attack as he was electioneering, Tozbira said.
In Satkhira, at least 15 people were injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League and Biklapadhara in Satkhira 2 constituency on Wednesday night.
In addition, the motorcade of Jatiya Party candidate from Satkhira 1 constituency Syed Didar Bakht was attacked at Nagarghata in Tala upazila.
At a press conference at Satkhira Press Club, Didar claimed that around 20-25 men, led by Nagarghata UP Chairman Kamruzzaman Lipu, launched the attack and vandalized two microbuses. A number of Didar’s supporters were also beaten.
Kamruzzaman has denied the allegation, and said no attack took place in Nagarghata.
In Rangamati, the Awami League office in Baghaichhari upazila was burnt to ashes after miscreants set it on fire early on Thursday.
Local Awami League leader Rasel Chowdhury blamed BNP-Jamaat men for the incident.
Baghaichhari police station OC Manzurul Islam said they were investigating the matter.
In Comilla, BNP candidate from Comilla 5 constituency Prof Md Yunus was attacked while he was campaigning in Nimshar Bazar of Burichang upazila on Thursday morning.
Witnesses said a number of miscreants attacked the campaign rally with improvised weapons, leaving 10 including Yunus leaving injured. They also vandalized the car that was carrying the BNP candidate.
Mehedi Hasan, Yunus’s son, was hit in the head during the attack.
Burichang police station OC Anukul Chandra Biswas said police went to the location and rescued Yunus after being informed of the incident.
No one has been detained as yet, the OC added.
In Tangail, at least two people were injured and eight vehicles vandalized in a clash between Awami League and Jatiya Party supporters in Sadar upazila on Thursday afternoon.
Awami League candidate Md Sanowar Hossain said the supporters of Jatiya Party candidate Shafiullah Al Munir attacked the Awami League activists.
In Sunamganj, a campaign office of the Grand Alliance was set on fire in Bishwambarpur upazila early on Thursday.
Leaders of the Grand Alliance have blamed BNP-Jamaat men over the arson attack.
