The election campaign of Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, a BNP candidate for the Lakshmipur 3 constituency, was allegedly attacked by activists of ruling Awami League affiliated organizations.

A total of 30 people of both rival groups, including Annie and two policemen, were injured in the incident that took place in Shantirhat Bazar area in Lakshmipur sadar upazila around 10:30am on Monday.

On information, police rushed to the scene and fired two rounds of blank bullets to bring the situation under control.

The injured policemen are Inspector Mohammad Mafiz and Deputy Assistant Inspector Razzak.

Chandragonj police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said the clash took place between supporters of Awami League and BNP. Police fired two rounds of blanks to quell the situation, and detained 12 people from the spot for questioning.

Following the incident, Annie said members of ruling Awami League’s youth and student fronts- Jubo League and Chhatra League- have allegedly launched an attack on his pre-scheduled election campaign rally, leaving 20 of his partymen, including himself, injured.

He also claimed that he had informed the law enforcement agencies beforehand about the possible attack, but they did not take any measures to prevent it.

However, District Jubo League President AKM SalahuddinTipu denied the allegation, saying that Annie’s supporters attacked members of Jubo League and Chhatra League at first. The attack left 10 leaders and activists of Jubo League injured, he claimed.
