Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed says not even donations to a mosque will be allowed till a new government is formed

Update : 21 Nov 2018, 08:34 PM

No elected representative, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, can inaugurate or lay foundation stone of any development project from now on till a new government is formed after the election, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed has said.

Briefing reporters on Wednesday, he said: “We have instructed different ministries not to initiate any development work ahead of the election. Only the ongoing projects can continue.

“In fact, no apolitical fundraiser, including donations to a mosque, can be organized during this time.”

According to the electoral code of conduct, after the election schedule is announced, the prime minister, ministers, MPs, other high-level political officials of the government, and deputy leaders of political parties cannot take part in any kind of inauguration of developmental projects or give donations.

Earlier on November 8, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the schedule of the 11th general election to take place on December 23 in a televised speech. However, it was rescheduled to December 30 after the commission took written pleas from different parties into cognizance.
