EC to sit on August 30 again to decide RPO amendment

A commissioner says they will further discuss the issue at their next meeting

Update : 26 Aug 2018, 02:29 PM

The Election Commission has held a meeting on the amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) 1972—in order to use electronic voting machines (EVM) in the upcoming national election.

“The commission has begun discussions over RPO reform. We have also discussed the use of electronic voting machines,” Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam told reporters—following the meeting held at the commission office on Sunday.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda chaired the meeting.

But the commission failed to decide on what kind of changes to make in the RPO, Rafiqul said—adding that they will meet again, on August 30, to discuss the issue.

A final decision will come after several meetings, the commissioner said.

“We are trying to amend the RPO to include the use of electronic voting machines in the upcoming polls.”

He said the proposals about the amendment will then be sent to the law ministry. The ministry will place them before parliament after thorough scrutiny.

Rafiqul said they are not sure whether it will be possible to send the proposals by the next session.
