Ten winners emerged from 58 participating students at the finale of the 6th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2014 held at the Dhaka University’s AF Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban yesterday.
Saiful Islam from Dhaka University (DU) topped the list while rest of the winners are, as their ranks, Md Taibur Rahman from Khulna University, Shihab-Al-Mehedi from BUET, Junaid Kamal from DU, Mir Imtiaz Mostafiz from BUET, Ahmed Nazimuddin from BUET, Md Tarikul Islam from Uttara University, Md Jahangir Hossen from MM College, Jessore, Nafiz Imtiaz Tripto from BUET and Md Lelin Chowdhury from Begum Rokeya University.
Organised by Bangladesh Mathematical Society and funded by AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation, the olympiad kicked off at the regional level in Khulna University on November 14 and later took place in Rajshahi, Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Chittagong and Sylhet regions subsequently.
Alongside crests and certificates, the top 10 winners were presented with financial awards for pursuing further education.
Cheif guest at the finale DU Science Faculty Dean Dr Md Abdul Aziz distributed the accords among the winners.
In the first round, around 600 participants took part in the six regions and appeared for a 90-minute test on analytical geometry, algebra and calculus.
Professor AFM Khodadad Khan, former professor of Dhaka University, said: “The goal of the olympiad is to encourage the gifted students to cultivate and enhance their analytical skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills and research skills.”
“Mathematics is playing the most basic and essential role in this modern era, without math, technology and science cannot work,” he said.
He urged the students to keep practicing mathematics and participating in such olympiads to measure their developments.
Dr Md Shahidul Islam, secretary general of Bangladesh Mathematical Society, said: “If a nation wants to achieve development, its manpower must be educated in maths as mathematics is needed in every sector of development.”
