Aspirant students of Dhaka University demanded arrest and exemplary punishment of police personnel who charged baton on students during a protest rally in the capital’s Shahbagh on Sunday.
They made the demand while addressing a protest rally on Dhaka University campus yesterday.
At least 13 aspirant students were injured as police charged baton on them on Sunday to disperse them from Shahbagh intersection.
They also made university proctor and vice-chancellor responsible for the attack.
“Policemen launched the attack following the direction of the DU authorities,” said Mohammad Razu Hossain, an agitator.
Rubonti Haidar who was severely injured in Sunday’s attack said: “We will continue movement until our demands are met”.
The protestors also announced to besiege education ministry on December 21 if actions against the police personnel were not taken within the period.
The protestors brought out a procession from DU, which marched different streets of the campus.
Left-leaning student bodies, including the Bangladesh Chhatra Union and the Chhatra Front also brought out separate processions expressing soliderity with the students.
Admission seekers of Dhaka University have been on protest for more than a month seeking reinstatement of the second time admission test facility.
DU acting proctor Amzad Ali, however, said: “The university authorities do not know anything about the police action. Police obeyed their own responsibility.”
“We have asked them [admission seekers] several times that such demonstration will not influence our decision. But, they are continuing protest without permission of authorities.”
On October 14, the university authorities decided not to allow any admission seeker to appear in its admission tests for first year honours courses more than once.
Just after immediate reaction of the decision, Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique said the decision was made to eliminate unequal competition between regular and irregular students, and discourage tutoring at coaching centres.
