Admission seekers, who had been observing hunger strike since Wednesday on the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar, postponed strike yesterday and gave seven-day ultimatum to restore the previous system that allowed aspirants to appear in the admission test of Dhaka University twice.

The admission seekers also threatened that they would start hunger strike again if the university authority does not fulfill their demand by November 24.

Some teachers of the university, inclduing MM Akash (Economics department), Fahmidul Haque (Mass Communication and Journalism department), Tanzim Uddin Khan (International Relations department), Aminul Islam (Sociology department), and AM Rasheda (former DU senate member), went to Shaheed Minar around 6pm and requested admission seekers to break their hunger strike. Later, they broke the strike with juice.

MM Akash said: “We have requested the protesters not to follow such detrimental programme because it could be disastrous for their health and mental strength.

“We will talk with university chancellor and vice-chancellor if needed.”

Moreover, a statement was sent to the protesters where 24 DU teachers expressed solidarity with their demands and requested them to withdraw hunger strike.

Mohammad Sakibul Rahman Pranto, passed HSC from Dhanmondi Ideal College, said: “According to the direction of the DU teachers, we will not observe any protest programme within this period, if the DU authorities do not reconsider our demand to attend admission tests twice, we will resume our protest programme from November 24.”
