Admission seekers protesting at the Dhaka University (DU), will start a fast-unto-death programme at the Central Shaheed Minar premises today, demanding restoration of the previous system that allowed aspirants to take the university’s admission test twice.
The protesting students who failed to secure a seat in DU this year, made the announcement at a press conference held at the Madhur Canteen in DU yesterday afternoon.
They also announced the submission of a memorandum to the chancellor of the university today.
Md Salman Khan, who passed the HSC examination from Kabi Kazi Nazrul Government College this year, read out a written statement that said: “Following the announcement of Dhaka University, other public universities including Jagannath University and Jahangirnagar University have also adopted the same system. So where will we go?”
“Why should the batch of 2014 be deprived of higher education?” asked Salman.
On October 14, DU authorities decided to allow only freshly passed HSC students to appear in its admission tests for once only from the 2015-16 academic sessions, after witnessing a mass failure of students in this year’s admission tests.
The decision triggered an outcry among the students who did not qualify in this year’s admission test.
