A day-long annual conference titled “Microbes and Industrial Development: Bangladesh Perspectives” jointly organised by the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists (BSM) and the Department of Microbiology of Dhaka University (DU) was held yesterday at the Microbiology Department of the university.
State Minister for Ministry of Science and Technology Architect Yeafesh Osman inaugurated the conference as the chief guest. President of BSM Professor Dr Md Nural Anwar presided over the function while DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique addressed as special guest and Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Professor Dr Md Imdadul Haque addressed as guest of honour. Profesor Dr Mahmuda Yasmin, chairperson of the Department of Microbiology, delivered the welcome speech while General Secretary of BSM Professor Dr M A Malek accorded the vote of thanks.
Yeafesh Osman urged the young generation to concentrate on subjects of science & technology to face the 21st century’s global competition. He said socio-economic development of a country largely depends upon scientific and technological advancement.
He also emphasised on the efforts to make the science education attractive before the general mass and hoped the language of science should reach the common people effectively.
Arefin Siddique in his speech urged the microbiologists to conduct continuous research for ensuring food security of the country as well as of the world. He also said the knowledge of microbiology should be utilized properly to improve agricultural system in the country.
The VC expressed his hope that microbiologists would play a vital role to the overall development of Bangladesh.
