Update : 25 Dec 2013, 07:09 PM

Intern doctors of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, who went on an indefinite strike on Monday night, called off the strike yesterday after a discussion with MMCH authorities and leaders of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).

The interns went on a strike following an incident of alleged misbehaviour with two intern doctors at CCU around 9pm on Monday night.

A patient named AKM Emdadul Haque, 75, got admitted to the hospital on Saturday. A relative of Haque misbehaved with two on-duty interns at CCU over treatment issues.

Soon after the incident, 180 intern doctors at the hospital went on strike. They suspended their activities including emergency services at the hospital. They also ransacked the room of the MMCH director.

Later, the interns demanded immediate arrest of the person responsible for the misbehaviour. They also demanded security of the interns and staff working at the hospital.

Dr Mithun Sutradhar, president of intern doctors association at MMCH, said: “After a fruitful meeting with MMCH director Brigadier General Md Fasiur Rahman and BMA leaders, we withdrew the strike at 6pm this evening.”

They would join the work from today as the authorities assured them of taking necessary steps against the responsible people soon and rendering proper security measures for the interns and the staff as well, said Dr Mithun.

Dr Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan, secretary of BMA local unit said: “We convinced the interns to return to their work for the greater interest of the patients admitted to the hospital.”

“Proper security measure is a must for the interns and staff working at the hospital,” said the BMA leader.

Director of the hospital Brigadier General Md. Fasiur Rahman said: “We will strictly maintain the security of the interns and staff to keep a congenial atmosphere for rendering better treatment facilities at the hospital.”
