The Ministry of Education has decided to keep educational institutions closed throughout the month of Ramadan by revising the 2026 academic calendar.
The revised holiday schedule was published on Wednesday by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the ministry.
According to the new schedule, lower secondary and secondary schools will remain closed from Thursday. The closure will continue until March 26. Following the public holiday on March 26 and the weekly weekend on Friday and Saturday, classes will resume on March 29.
Last Sunday, after hearing a writ petition, the High Court ordered that schools remain closed for the entire month of Ramadan. An appeal was later filed against the order, and the Appellate Division stayed the High Court’s directive.
However, before the completion of the writ proceedings, the Ministry of Education revised and published the academic holiday schedule on Wednesday.
It may be noted that the revised schedule includes a holiday during Ramadan on February 21 to mark Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.
