The interim government has issued an ordinance establishing Dhaka Central University, bringing seven major government colleges in the capital under a single administrative framework.

The ordinance was issued on Sunday, paving the way for the formal launch of the new university. It states that the seven colleges will be merged with the university while retaining their individual identities.

Dhaka Central University will operate following the model of the National University. Honours and degree programs in various subjects will continue at the seven colleges as before. Colleges offering higher secondary education will also continue those programs. However, honours and master’s level academic activities will be centrally administered from the main campus.

According to the ordinance, the colleges affiliated with the university will follow the prescribed curriculum, examination system and certificate-awarding provisions. The institutions include Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Government Titumir College, Government Bangla College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College.

The ordinance further states that the movable and immovable properties of the colleges will remain unchanged.

It also provides for the establishment of a permanent campus with necessary infrastructure and facilities for academic and administrative activities. Until the permanent campus is constructed, university operations may be conducted from rented premises.
