Teachers’ strike continues at JU

Update : 30 Sep 2013, 08:39 AM

A section of teachers of Jahangirnagar University observed strike for the second consecutive day yesterday, demanding the removal of the JU’s vice-chancellor.

Following the early declaration of General Teachers’ Forum, the agitated teachers boycotted classes and examinations while few teachers, who are against the forum’s agitation, took classes.

On the other hand, few departments including the English, Bangla, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering departments took examination of different student batches.

General Teachers’ Forum Convener Prof Md Hanif Ali told the Dhaka Tribune: “If VC Prof Anwar Hossain does not resign from his post within tomorrow [today], the forum would compel him to leave the VC’s post by launching tougher movements against him.”

Earlier in September, the education ministry had convinced the teachers to postpone their ongoing movement for 15 working days and formed a probe committee to investigate into the allegations brought against Prof Anwar Hossain.

The probe committee was supposed to publish its report within September 24 but it extended the time for investigation till yesterday. DU Professor Muhibur Rahman, the chief of the committee, expects that the report would be submitted by today.

However, the protesting teachers thought they had provided all evidences of their allegations against the VC and that there was no need for the extension of time for investigation.

Social Science faculty Dean Prof Amir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “We submitted two audio records of Prof Anwar Hossain to the education ministry which states his given orders to Chhatra League and is sufficient enough to prove his guilt.”

Contacted, JU VC Prof Anwar Hossain said: “Teachers are supposed to stay at the classrooms but unfortunately they are not doing so which is very much shocking and unexpected.”

“Their strike during the investigation is also irrational,” JU VC added.
