The MPO-affiliated Education Nationalization Alliance announced the suspension of all protest programs until Eid-ul-Azha, showing trust and respect for the farewell speech of outgoing education adviser Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud.
Since February 12, the alliance had been holding sit-ins and symbolic hunger strikes in front of the National Press Club, demanding the nationalization of MPO-affiliated educational institutions, along with festival allowances, medical allowances, and house rent.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the Maulana Mohammad Akram Khan Hall of the National Press Club on Thursday.
Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, the member secretary of the alliance, made the declaration after reading a written statement.
In his speech, Delwar Hossain said: "In his farewell address, Education Adviser Professor Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud acknowledged the teachers' demands and announced an increase in festival allowances, a supplementary budget from the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, and additional allowances, including house rent, medical, and entertainment allowances, from the next budget. In light of this assurance, we have decided to suspend our ongoing movement until Eid-ul-Azha."
He added that under the banner of the “Alliance for the Nationalization of MPO-affiliated Education”, teachers and staff had been protesting for 22 days, demanding the nationalization of MPO-affiliated institutions, 100% festival allowances, and housing and medical benefits as per government rules.
The alliance expects the Ministry of Education to take effective measures and issue a notification before Eid-ul-Azha regarding their demands.
"If the government fails to implement our demands before Eid-ul-Azha, we will resume our movement with even greater intensity," Delwar Hossain added.
