Defining liberal arts college to prospective students

Update : 08 Sep 2013, 05:42 PM

USA is a prevalent destination for higher studies. However, with minimal experience and information we usually go through a needlessly lengthy process when selecting universities. Attending a liberal arts college in the US is a very popular option.

Let us try to understand what a liberal arts college has to offer and how essential it is for our higher education in the long run. A liberal arts college is a college with a primary emphasis on undergraduate study in the liberal arts and sciences.

In liberal arts college students generally major in a particular discipline while receiving exposure to a wide range of academic subjects, which can include sciences as well as traditional humanities subjects.

A “liberal arts” institution can be defined as  a college or university where the curriculum aims at instilling a broader general knowledge and developing general intellectual capacities, in contrast to a professional, vocational, or technical curriculum such as Medicine or Engineering. Though the liberal arts term was born in UK, its prominence found a stronger footing in the United States eventually.

Liberal arts colleges are found in all parts of the world. Examples of such colleges are Bishop’s University in Canada, St. Thomas University in Fredericton, Canada, John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, European College of Liberal Arts in Germany, University College Utrecht in the Netherlands, Foundation for Liberal and Management Education in Pune, India, Shalem College in Jerusalem, Israel, Campion College in Sydney, Australia and Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco.

Liberal arts colleges come in different forms. One of them is a residential option. The experience of living on campus brings a wide variety of cultural, political, and intellectual events to students who might not otherwise seek them out in a non-residential setting. One can easily take two years of time before declaring their major, by completing all other humanities and other general knowledge classes in the first two years.

Subjects that commonly fall under the Liberal Arts College curriculum are Sociology, Philosophy, Religion, Literature and so forth. These additional courses help one to build character and worldly knowledge. It also helps them to gear up to deal with acquiring future jobs in the job market.
