Update : 03 Jan 2025, 07:30 PM
Jahangirnagar University (JU) hosted the day-long "Bird Fair 2025" to raise public awareness about bird conservation, continuing its annual tradition.

On Friday, at 10am, the fair was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, who released balloons in front of the university's Zahir Raihan Auditorium.

Speaking as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Dr Kamrul Ahsan said that the bird fair is one of the university's finest events.

He highlighted that events like the Bird Fair and Butterfly Fair bring people of all religions and backgrounds together.

He also expressed concern that visible infrastructure developments in areas like Sajek for human recreation have displaced ethnic minorities and various other species.

Similarly, the development of visible infrastructure at Jahangirnagar University has damaged bird habitats.

Calling for collective awareness to protect the habitats of migratory birds, he said: "Animals have value alongside humans. In taking various initiatives, we must ensure the interests of animals remain intact."

Organized by the Department of Zoology, the day-long Bird Fair featured various events and competitions.

The events included a birdwatching competition at 7:30am, a bird-themed photography exhibition, and a drawing competition for children and adolescents at 8:45am.

Other activities included bird observation with telescopes and binoculars, bird identification competitions, and an open quiz competition on birds.

Additionally, awards such as the Big Bird Bangladesh Award, Scientific Publication Award, Conservation Media Award, and Special Recognition Award 2025 were presented.

Co-organizers of the fair included the Wildlife Rescue Center, Bangladesh Bird Club, Arannayk Foundation, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, Bangladesh Zoological Society, IUCN, and the Bangladesh Forest Department.

The welcome speech was delivered by the convener of the Bird Fair, Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan, while the closing remarks were given by Professor Dr Md Mansurul Haque, Chairman of the Department of Zoology.

It is worth noting that the first Bird Fair at Jahangirnagar University was initiated by the Bangladesh Bird Club in 2000.

Since 2004, the Department of Zoology has been directly involved.

While the fair was not held in 2011 and 2021, this year marks the 23rd edition of the Bird Fair.
