East West University (EWU) joined the global community in celebrating Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week from Friday to Monday.
The event, organized by the Department of Information Studies at EWU in collaboration with the Unesco Dhaka Office, aimed to promote media and information literacy among students and the wider community.
Throughout the week, a series of activities took place, including awareness campaigns, rallies, seminars, and online discussions.
These initiatives focused on equipping participants with the skills necessary to critically evaluate information, identify misinformation and disinformation, and foster responsible digital citizenship.
The event was graced by a number of distinguished guests, including Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chief adviser of EWU, Dr Khalilur Rahman, member of the Board of Trustees at EWU, Professor Dr Shams Rahman, vice-chancellor of EWU, Professor Dr M Ashiq Mosaddiq, pro vice-chancellor of EWU, Dr Susan Vize, Unesco country representative in Bangladesh, Professor Dr Md Roknuzzaman, chairman of the Department of Information Science and Library Management at the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr Dilara Begum, chairperson of the Department of Information Studies at EWU, and Noore Jannat Proma, head of the Communication and Information Department at Unesco Dhaka Office.
In their addresses, the esteemed guests emphasized the critical importance of media literacy in today’s digital age.
They stressed the need for individuals to navigate the vast sea of information, discern credible sources, and avoid falling victim to misinformation and disinformation.
The speakers also highlighted how media and information literacy is essential for fostering informed and responsible global citizens in an increasingly digital world.
EWU’s celebration of MIL Week is part of its ongoing commitment to promoting digital literacy and critical thinking among students and the broader community.
