Students failed in HSC besiege education boards across country

Students claim subject mapping caused poor results, despite students performing well

Update : 20 Oct 2024, 06:04 PM

The students who failed in the HSC examination laid siege to education boards across Bangladesh, including Comilla, Jessore, Chittagong, demanding the cancellation of the published results and a new evaluation.

The failed students staged demonstrations at the education boards with their single demand on Sunday.

The protesting students said that the method used for subject mapping of the six canceled exams created significant disparities.

They pointed out that only three exams were held under the Sylhet Madrasa Board, yet their results turned out better due to subject mapping.

In contrast, despite performing well in their exams, many students failed.

The students emphasized that their protest is against this perceived inequality.

The protesting students said: "We are not satisfied with the results given to us. We believe we have been treated unfairly. Our only demand is that HSC results be issued based on our secondary school performance."

Meanwhile, in front of the Chittagong Education Board, students protested outside the offices of the Board Chairman and Secretary after their demands were not met.

They warned of stricter protests, including road blockades, if their demands were not addressed.

Around an hour and a half into the protests, Marjina Akter, the Chairman of the Jessore Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, arrived at the scene.

A team from the army also reached the location to help manage the situation.

At one point, the Education Board Chairman spoke with the students and their parents. The protesting students and their guardians submitted a memorandum to the Chairman, listing their demands.

In Comilla, the board chairman, Professor Md Nizamul Karim, responded to the demands of the protesting students, said that the results of the seven subjects from this year's HSC exams and the SSC results were determined through mapping, as per the Ministry of Education's decision.

The students present demanded that results be announced based on the mapping of all subjects from the SSC results.

He further said: "I have asked the students to submit their demands in writing, and we will send it to the ministry. If they want to change their results, they must apply for re-evaluation, and then we can verify the matter. A group is spreading misinformation among students, claiming that the answer sheets have been destroyed. This is false and baseless. The education board does not have the authority to make decisions on this matter; only the Ministry of Education can decide."

Earlier, after a prolonged suspension of exams during the student-public protests, the interim government announced new exam dates.

Some students, demanding the cancellation of the exams, surrounded the Secretariat.

Facing the pressure of the protests, the Chairman of the Dhaka Education Board announced that the remaining exams would be evaluated using a "subject mapping" method.

Following this, the HSC and equivalent exam results were published on October 15, leading to accusations of discrimination from the failed students.
