Students of Jagannath University (JnU) detained Professor Farid Ahmad on Thursday, accusing him of involvement in the July 15 attack by the Chhatra League and the July 17 police assault during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Jahangirnagar University.

The students detained the professor around 11:30am at the JnU campus and handed him over to the Kotwali police station.

Tawhid Islam, a philosophy student at JnU, said: "We recognized him on our campus this morning and detained him. There is a case against him at Ashulia police station for aiding the Chhatra League and police attacks on students. We handed him over to the police without any further action."

Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Enamul Haque confirmed the incident, adding: "The students detained him and turned him over to us. He is implicated in a case filed at Ashulia police station related to the attack on students at Jahangirnagar University. He is currently in our custody, and if Ashulia police wish to arrest him, they can do so. If we receive instructions from senior officials, we will arrest him and present him in court."

On September 29, Sajjadul Islam, an English Department student, filed a case against the former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Nurul Alam at Ashulia police station concerning the July 15 attack.

In this case, Professor Farid Ahmad was named as the seventh accused for his role in supporting the attack on students.

Earlier, on August 18, Professor Farid Ahmad was declared "unwanted" by the students of his department.
