Choosing your major

Update : 01 Sep 2013, 03:32 PM

What is your passion?

Finding happiness in your professional life hangs on whether you are passionate about your work or not. One often ignores asking oneself what they are most passionate about. People around you may think they know more about what your major should be than you; parents and relatives in particular often try to drill their choice of major into your head. Ask yourself the question instead of asking others. The choice, and consequence, is ultimately yours.

How much can you expect to make?

One should never disregard factors like salary potential or job opportunity after the major is complete. Finding contentment and happiness in life in a big way rests on financial health. Sometimes it may be possible to channel your passions towards paths you hadn’t considered which may eventually lead to success.

Which institutions offer your major?

If you have your mind made up to go to a specific university and do a particular major you need to ensure that the institution of your choice offers a degree within that area. Availability of your major of choice and the kind of programmes offered has a big impact on your search for universities.

Figure out all other expenses

Some majors require moving; and you must be mindful of all the strings attached with relocation – extra financial burden, accommodation, cultural barriers etc. Bangladesh has an agrarian economy but if you want to study anything related to agriculture you have to move out of the capital, Dhaka. If you pursue a degree that is only offered at a few institutions you can expect to pay more overall. You would need to think additionally of how your major may impact your expenses over all and whether you can afford the changes in your current financial situation.

Establish your forte

Sometimes, the areas where you most easily succeed are in contrast with what you really care about, but usually this is not so. Think about all the courses you have taken. Which ones did you have a particular flair for? Teachers are often the best at identifying aptitudes within their students. If you are uncertain about what area you perform best in, ask one of your teachers. It is likely that they can provide you with valuable ideas and point out a direction that you had not previously considered. If your major doesn’t support your strengths, you will probably find that the curriculum within your area of choice is more difficult than you anticipated, making it more difficult for you to succeed.

Can you carry the load?

The work load involved with a specific major may be of importance to you if you have to work and attend school at the same time. Some majors, such as architecture, are more time consuming than others, and this is truer if the major you have chosen does not complement with your natural abilities. If you are looking for a major with a workload that is light enough to allow you to work and pursue other interests, consult with a guardian or counsellor to best determine your course of action.

Predecessors have the wisdom

If you already have a major in mind that you think is the right fit for you, consider chatting with someone who has already obtained a degree in that field. They can probably answer your most specific questions better than a guidance counsellor as they have had firsthand experience with it. Additionally, they can provide information about the curriculum, the workload, as well as tell you about their experience looking for work after graduation.
