Jagannath University (JnU) students held a protest march against extrajudicial killings, mob justice, and anarchy on the campus on Thursday.
The protest, organized under the banner of the General Students' Forum of JnU, addressed the growing concern over mob justice in educational institutions.
A student at the rally said: "We are witnessing instances of mob justice in various educational institutions. Two people were recently beaten to death at Jahangirnagar University and Dhaka University. We strongly protest such actions. Mob justice and extrajudicial killings should not be tolerated anywhere, not just on campuses."
Ivan Tahseeb, a student of mass communication and journalism, added: "We want to make it clear that extrajudicial killings are unacceptable. If anyone commits a wrong, the administration should handle it. We, as students, will assist the administration if necessary, but we must stand against mob justice."
Another student, Yasin Piash, expressed concern about the potential for further unrest if such practices continue. "If mob justice persists on campuses, there will be chaos like in the past. We don’t want to return to a time when the Chhatra League would torture someone under the guise of being Jamaat-Shibir. It is unacceptable that two people were killed through mob justice. We demand justice and good governance."
Students from various departments joined the protest to voice their concerns.
The protest follows the deaths of Shamim Ahmed, a former organizing secretary of Jahangirnagar University's Chhatra League unit, and Tofazzal, a youth detained in Dhaka University’s Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall on suspicion of theft. Both were beaten to death on Wednesday afternoon and midnight at their respective universities.
