Dr Md Shanawez Hossain, associate professor of Global Studies & Governance (GSG) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has been chosen to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a distinguished exchange program organized by the United States Department of State.

The program will take place from September 21 to October 12, 2024, in Washington, DC, and other locations across the United States.

Dr Hossain, the sole representative from a private university in Bangladesh, will join a diverse group of scholars and leaders from around the world.

The IVLP will offer him the opportunity to explore critical global issues including US foreign policy, multilateral cooperation, climate change advocacy, human rights, economic development, national security, and the role of academia in policy analysis and formulation.

He will be representing IUB alongside participants from public universities, think tanks, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reflecting a broad spectrum of expertise and perspectives.

The IVLP aims to provide foreign leaders and scholars with the chance to engage with their American counterparts, fostering cross-cultural understanding and strengthening friendly relations between the U.S. and other nations.

Dr Hossain expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “Participating in the IVLP will deepen my understanding of the U.S. government’s decision-making process and its impact on global foreign policy. This experience will significantly enrich my academic and research work, offering unique insights into foreign policymaking across various contexts.”

He also highlighted that the program will enhance his professional network and develop his communication and leadership skills through interactions with individuals from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.

“The experience gained will greatly benefit my teaching and research at IUB, and enable me to contribute more effectively to policy discussions within Bangladesh,” he added.

Upon his return, Dr Hossain plans to share his experiences with the IUB community and beyond by organizing seminars, workshops, and public lectures. Through these activities, he hopes to inspire others to engage in similar programs and contribute to Bangladesh’s development through informed policymaking.
