Education and Planning Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud, has announced that all remaining university vice-chancellor positions will be filled simultaneously.
He also stated that the current curriculum and examination methods will continue with the existing textbooks. A circular regarding this will be issued soon.
Additionally, he expressed his concerns about the occupation of educational institutions similar to land grabbing and mentioned that measures are being taken to address this issue, reports Prothol Alo.
On Saturday afternoon, while addressing journalists at his residence, Professor Mahmud discussed various administrative issues including political bias in university appointments, corruption in infrastructure development, and textbook publishing.
Professor Mahmud highlighted that among over 50 public universities in the country, over 40 are currently without heads.
He pointed out that it is not just the vice-chancellor positions that are vacant, but also the posts of pro-vice-chancellors, treasurers, and other administrative roles. The previous practice of politicizing these positions has made it challenging to find suitable candidates with the necessary academic qualifications, administrative skills, and global perspectives.
He emphasized that this does not imply a lack of high-quality researchers and teachers in universities; rather, many capable individuals are silently working due to the prevailing political culture, which also affects their interaction with the broader academic community.
Professor Mahmud criticized the widespread corruption in infrastructure development at educational institutions.
He mentioned the creation of a powerful class of contractors under political patronage, who have become notorious for their intimidating practices. Efforts are underway to create an environment to address these issues.
He added that some qualified teachers are hesitant to accept positions such as treasurer due to fear of the prevailing situation.
The education advisor noted that the process of finding and appointing qualified individuals to various university administrative positions is ongoing.
He mentioned receiving hundreds of recommendations and is actively searching for suitable candidates. He also pointed out that the position of UGC Chairman is currently vacant, leading to a lack of oversight in private educational institutions. Proposals for appointing a couple of acceptable candidates quickly are being considered.
Professor Mahmud urged other teachers not to view those appointed to administrative positions as competitors.
