Dr Md Rahmat Ullah, the dean of Dhaka University's Faculty of Law, has resigned from his position and also stepped down as chairman of the law department in response to student demands.
He submitted his resignation letter to the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University on Thursday noon.
In his resignation letter, Dr Rahmat mentioned that he was resigning to protect his honour, personal and family security, and to ensure the continuation of academic activities within the faculty and department.
Student protests demanding Dr Rahmat's resignation had been ongoing for several days, accompanied by criticism on social media.
In his letter, Dr Rahmat Ullah addressed allegations made by students on August 17. These allegations included his failure to clarify his position during various campus incidents, his participation in a Neel Dal meeting, and his alleged silence regarding an attack on students during the “Productive Ramadan” program at Bangabandhu Tower last Ramadan.
The students had given Dr Rahmat a 24-hour ultimatum to resign from his posts.
On August 19, faculty members requested his resignation and locked all offices of the Law Department and Faculty of Law.
They also continued to distribute defamatory posters and engaged in a negative social media campaign. Amid the accusations, Dr Rahmat chose to resign to protect his honour and ensure the continuation of academic activities.
Previously, the deans of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Fine Arts, Abdul Bachir and Nisar Hossain, respectively, also resigned.
However, Pro-Vice Chancellor Sitesh Chandra Bachar said the resignations will come into effect once the new VC is appointed.
