Public university teachers are set to meet with Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury regarding the withdrawal of the Prottoy pension scheme on Monday.
The ministry's public relations officer, Abul Khair, told the media that the minister would meet with leaders of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Associations at 4pm in the conference room of the Ministry of Education.
Dr Md Akhtarul Islam, president of the federation and professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, also confirmed the meeting.
Previously, a meeting with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, who is also the ruling Awami League’s general secretary, did not yield a resolution, prompting the continuation of their movement against the pension scheme.
Now, the teachers are hopeful for a productive discussion with the education minister.
Since July 1, teachers from 39 public universities have been on strike, halting classes and exams in response to the federation’s call for action.
Earlier, despite a 15-day sit-in, the teachers' demands were not met.
The situation escalated with the quota reform movement on July 15, leading to university closures and a temporary pause in the teachers' on-ground activities.
