Finance Minister: Teachers' movement against Prottoy scheme illogical

  • ‘ADB providing more support than expected’
  • Describes scheme cancellation movement as irrational
Update : 02 Jul 2024, 05:43 PM

Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali has said he finds no justification for the teachers' movement against the Prottoy pension scheme.

He described the university teachers' movement demanding the cancellation of the scheme as irrational.

The finance minister made the remarks while talking to reporters after paying a courtesy call to Asian Development Bank (ADB) Vice President for South, Central and West Asia (South, Central and West Asia) Yingming Yang at his office room at the Planning Ministry on Tuesday.

He also reiterated that he finds no logical basis for the ongoing teachers' movement regarding the scheme.

Responding to another question, Mahmood Ali said: "The ADB is providing more support than expected."

The indefinite strike of teachers and employees of public universities is underway across the country for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding their exclusion from the “discriminatory” pension scheme.

The Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association called for a boycott of classes, examinations, and administrative work a day before the start of the implementation of Prottoy, a new pension scheme introduced by the National Pension Authority.

The Universal Pension Scheme started its journey on August 17, 2023 with four schemes: Prabashi, Pragati, Suraksha, and Equality.

Later, a new scheme, the Prottoy scheme, was introduced for the officers and employees of all autonomous and state-owned organisations.
