“Jahangirnagar University Day” is being celebrated with colourful arrangements on Friday.

On the occasion of the day, Vice Chancellor Professor Md Nurul Alam inaugurated the programs by hoisting the national flag on the Business Faculty premises at 10am.

A colourful procession was brought out from the spot at 10:30am and it paraded the campus before ending at the Selim Al Deen Muktamancha. Among others present were Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Sheikh Manjurul Haque, Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Mostafa Feroze, Treasurer Prof Rasheda Akhtar, deans of various faculties, Senate and Syndicate members, hall provosts, and proctorial body members.

Teachers, current and former students and staff of the university joined the procession and other events in person with enthusiasm, while many others shared their emotions on social media.

As part of the program, a day-long art exhibition and pitha mela were organized by the Fine Arts Department.

At 11:15am, a blood group determination program was held at TSC. Former and present teachers and students attended the reminiscence event at the Muktamancha. In the evening, a cultural program was organized by the Student Welfare and Counselling Centre.

The then government named Jahangirnagar Muslim University through an ordinance in line with the former name of Dhaka, Jahangirnagar, on August 20, 1970. Then, on January 12, 1971, the then-Governor of East Pakistan, Rear Admiral SM Ahsan, officially inaugurated the university. When the University Act was passed in 1973, its name was changed to Jahangirnagar University—the country’s first fully-residential institution for higher education. Jahangirnagar University started its journey with only 150 students in four departments.

Built in a quiet and pleasant environment near Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, the university now has 34 departments and four institutes. Currently, there are more than 750 teachers and about 18,000 students studying in these departments.

The university has 22 residential halls for the accommodation of male and female students.

The country's tallest Shaheed Minar, the Liberation War memorial sculpture "Sangshaptak," the Language Movement sculpture “Amar Ekushey," and a “Muktamancha” (amphitheatre) named after popular playwright Selim Al Deen tell the long and glorious history and tradition of this campus.

In addition to this, the university is playing a leading role in the fields of education and research. Famous teachers, researchers, economists, political personalities, sportsmen, and other prominent people in the country have taught here at various times.

The campus is popular for its greenery and for being a safe haven for guest birds in winter. It is also known as the “cultural capital” for the role of students in social movements and in the fields of art, culture, and sports.
