Students at Dhaka University demanding the cancellation of BCS preliminary results and the quota system in civil service, locked into a clash with law enforcers at Shahbagh intersection in the capital Thursday morning.
Witnesses said the clash erupted at about 11am when police barred them from gathering in the area and tried to foil the ongoing demonstrations.
Police charged with batons and fired tear gas shells at the demonstrators.
The angry protesters vandalised a number of vehicles in the area, turning the area into a battlefield.
Meanwhile, students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in front of the university to press home the same demand.
Students at Rajshahi University (RU) blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highways at about 10:45am, extending their support for the agitators.
Later, they removed the barricade at about 12:45pm.
On Wednesday, in response to the student protests, Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) said it would review the 34th BCS preliminary test results.
Those protests were held at Shahbagh intersection by students from institutions including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Eden College against the public service quota system .
The results of the 34th BCS preliminary examination were published on Monday.
A total of 12,033 candidates out of 225,575 candidates qualified for the Bangladesh Public Service Commission's written examinations.
