The government has introduced an outcome based education system under new curriculum that can be followed to turn Bangladeshi youth into soft skill based manpower and make them competent for different jobs, Education Minister Dipu Moni has said.

She made the statement at an event was organized on Friday by the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA), which is the premier global competition for students who own and operate a business.

Mentioning the Qudrat-i-Khuda Education Commission, the minister said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had ordered to form a national commission to formulate an effective and progressive education policy led by renowned scholar Dr Muhammad Qudrat-i-Khuda, but it could not be implemented.

“However, his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is implementing the education policy,” the minister said.

Following the prime minister's instructions, two ministries regarding education are working to transform the education system by implementing a new curriculum, she said.

“But the path to this transformation in the education system is not smooth. There will be many controversies and it will have to be dealt with and tackled,” said the minister.

She added that students are discouraged to ask questions in the classroom by teachers, and even family members do that too. “This affects a child's mindset and their thoughts.”

Dipu Moni said: "We have observed that students are lagging behind in terms of communication, soft and collaborating skills at the international level, but this curriculum will reduce this gap and make them skillful."

The minister further said: "The new curriculum has been designed in a way that will promote soft skills and create a balance for practicing democracy in class room.”

She added that these skills will let student beat global and domestic problems through thinking independently, and become stable entrepreneurs through idea generation and eliminating their habit of memorization.

She also hopes that the GSEA platform also contributes to promote and help our youth's ideas to make them skillful and successful entrepreneurs.

Deputy Minister of Education Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury said under the current outcome-based education system, students can enter the job market easily as entrepreneurs or job holders instead of remaining unemployed.

He said: “Entrepreneurship is not only about generating ideas or thriving as an individual, it is also thriving with the value of entrepreneurship.”

The deputy education minister also highlighted the prospect of the country's entrepreneurship and its challenges.
