Brac University announced the renaming of its engineering school as the BSRM School of Engineering.
The announcement was made in an event held recently at the campus, said a press release on Tuesday.
The event was attended by engineering faculty, students and alumni, as well as representatives from the BSRM Group of Companies.
“The Board of Trustees approved the renaming to recognize BSRM Group for their generous donation that will fund critical academic initiatives to support advanced research and modern pedagogy,” said Tamara Hasan Abed, chairperson, Board of Trustees, Brac University.
The BSRM School of Engineering will use the donation to recruit world-class faculty over the next several years, fund cutting-edge research in key impact areas and promote curriculum innovation.
The contribution by the BSRM Group to the University's endowment will also provide for a number of merit-based scholarships, including several full-tuition grants for engineering students, reads the release.
The BSRM Group of Companies is one of the oldest industry conglomerates of Bangladesh, and recognized as the leading steel manufacturer in the country.
Over the years since its founding in 1952, BSRM has contributed to the development of the country's key infrastructure by pioneering and manufacturing steel products in Bangladesh.
The company has remained firm in its commitment to quality while maintaining volume and investing in innovation. Most recently the first ever 50mm rod was specially designed and produced to meet the piling requirements of the Padma Bridge project.
In addition to infrastructure development, the BSRM Group has been contributing to national development through its extensive CSR programs that support livelihood and health, particularly in marginalized communities in both rural and urban areas, environmental stewardship, crisis response, and education including a free school for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Following our longstanding tradition of giving that was established by the founders of BSRM Group, we continually seek meaningful ways to impact key drivers of sustainable development in Bangladesh. We are pleased to make this gift to enable a new generation of engineers to be ready to accept the challenges for designing and building sustainable solutions,” said Aameir Alihussain, managing director of BSRM Group.
Founded by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Brac University was established to create and empower communities with ethical leaders who will spearhead positive change for greater social inclusion.
Evidence of this continues to be seen throughout the institutes, schools, departments and centres, with students and faculty engaged in multidisciplinary research and collaborating on a host of initiatives that ultimately benefit society.
“We welcome the gift from BSRM Group of Companies as the University embarks on a path of transformation to lead global discourses on innovation for development and social progress, while remaining steadfast in the spirit of its founding,” said Tamara Hasan Abed, chairperson, Board of Trustees, Brac University.
